Halloween does not have to mean plastic skeletons and cotton cobwebs that go straight into the bin on November 1. Handcrafted copper brings a warmer, more grown-up kind of glow to the season: candlelight reflecting off hammered metal, a carved pumpkin that becomes a keepsake, and pieces that keep working on your table well into Thanksgiving and winter.
Here is how to style copper for Halloween and autumn, with ideas you can reuse every year.
1. Start with a copper jack-o'-lantern
A carved pumpkin is the centrepiece of any Halloween display, but a real one lasts a few days. Our handmade copper pumpkin is a small 4" x 4" piece with the classic jack-o'-lantern face cut into copper, a brass lid and a hanger. Slip a small battery LED tealight inside and the face glows through the metal. On November 1 it simply becomes an autumn decoration, and next October it comes back out of the cupboard.
For a softer, less spooky look, the pure copper and dark copper pumpkin ornaments hang from a door handle, a wreath or a branch.
2. Layer candlelight at different heights
The most atmospheric Halloween tables use light at three levels: low tealights, medium candle holders and one tall piece. Copper multiplies every flame because the surface reflects it.
- Low: a set of three copper tealight holders along the centre of the table.
- Medium: a hammered copper candlestick with a deep red or black taper candle.
- Tall: a copper oil lamp with a glass chimney, for an old-lantern feel.
Never leave candles or oil lamps burning unattended, and keep them away from dry leaves and fabric.
3. Use a natural autumn palette
Copper already sits between orange and brown, so it pairs naturally with the colours of the season. Mix it with dried oak leaves, pine cones, small squash, dark wood and black or deep red candles. Avoid adding too many other metals; a single warm tone looks more intentional.
4. Serve seasonal drinks in copper
A Halloween party is a good excuse to bring out copper drinkware. A hand-engraved copper cocktail goblet or a pair of personalised copper goblets makes an ordinary cocktail feel like part of the décor. The cocktail goblet has a food-safe tin lining, so it suits acidic drinks such as cider or citrus punch. The personalised goblets are unlined solid copper, so use them for non-acidic drinks.
5. Keep it looking good
Candle soot and wax are the two things copper decorations meet most in October. Let wax harden, lift it off gently with your fingernail or a soft wooden tool, then wipe the surface with a soft cloth.
